some words ... the year that was ...

2007: THE YEAR THAT ...

THE YEAR THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN
THE YEAR THAT ETHNIC MINORITIES STILL WIPE YOUR WINDSCREEN
THE YEAR THAT SPIRALLED OUTTA CONTROL
THE YEAR THAT INSPIRED ME TO DIG A DEEP HOLE
THE YEAR THAT MADE ME WANNA CLIMB RIGHT IN
THE YEAR THAT POLITICS SHOULD BE BURNED IN A STEEL BIN
THE YEAR THAT I TRIED TO KICK AGAINS THE PRICKS
THE YEAR THAT'S STILL GOVERNED BY HICKS
THE YEAR THAT'S THE SAME AS MOST OTHERS
THE YEAR I MET NICE NEW SISTERS AND BROTHERS
THE YEAR I DECIDED TO ACT ON SOME SHIT
THE YEAR THAT TILL NOW AINT SEEN ME GET BIT
THE YEAR THAT I TOASTED ONE YEAR WITH A WOMAN WHO TOOK MY NAME
THE YEAR THAT I FOUND HUMILITY TO TAKE ON SOME BLAME
THE YEAR THAT I REALISED I WAS NEVER GONNA BE THE SAME
THE YEAR I SAW GROWTH, DEATH AND THE BEST BIT, NEW BIRTH
THE YEAR THAT THUS MADE ME HAPPY TO BE ON THIS EARTH

let the rain come ...

so its one of those monday mornings ... if i were to be residing past sheffield it would be referred to as 'grim up north' ... i wanted to go for a run this morning but such was the conditions i thought no ... enjoy a coffee and a long hot shower ... in the shower i started to sing what i think is one of the Beatles greates t ever moments .... and this song is way ahead of its time ... pay attention to bassline ... and the harmonies ... frikkin genius

TAKE A LEAF OUT OF FORREST'S BOOK ...

but someone i know has just started walking ... my main man Archer J Dawson is now mobile and abls to walk solo ...

letting go of a couch was the last step to freedom ... hey matt n cat ... i am stoked for ya both ... now watch him go ... isnt this called the ransacking period ?! ;)

March on archer march on
oh the couch is behind ya now
may your feet carry you well
from the living room to all over this town

Marcher Dawson ... you the man x

something has to give ...

i have a theory on violence, binge drinking and other motley pursuits in london ... it basically comes down to a basic element as the quark is in physics ... and the basic element is the tube ... ahhhhh london underground you need to be pulled from 'neath the earth shredded and replanted in away that would provide efficient and relatively care free journeying to the work place ...

pour example ... this morning following hurricaine esque conditions prevailing through the night we awoke to find 'bits of debris' all over london ... thus the debris hits the tracks and tubes are delayed ... so why isnt there someone who can move it !!!

instead there is still frikkin debris on the tracks at 10am ... if this was Japan a laser would have been pointed at said debris and the debris incinerated like in a sci fi film thereby allowing travelling to go on and NOT grind to a halt. But oh no ladies and gents this is london thus two men probably around the ages of 70 per man probably called mo and cliff too were deployed to lift and pick debris from the line ... can anyone else see where i am going ... i hope so as iam not going to for fear of offending everyone (including the elderly) and they dont deserve that ...

so to bring me round to the point that i was stressing at the inception of this wee piece ... as soon as i EVENTUALLY alighted from the Hammersmith and City line this morning i wished i had a hip flask full of brandy to calm me down such was the grrrrrrr that had built up inside ... i also called somebody a c**t for the seond day running as they shoved me through a barrier ... i am a placid man but gee this is getting hard to take ...

and before anyone thinks it ... i know i should cycle but its 8.5 miles each way and i end up being a sweaty wreck ... and i dont like it ... so there !

my solution is this ... take a German town planner a Japanese train desiger and some swiss scientists and get them to oversee a regeneration of the underground system because its present state is driving a man to drink and violent thoughts and actions ... and we dont need that ... i dont need that !!

sneaker, TAYLOR, pointer, shoe !

You know what i like ... success stories, stories that include hard work and toil, some blood n sweat and then deserved sucess ladies and gents ...

My good Buddy Gareth is what i like to call a success story ... he has also 'made it' in a good way ... toiled, observed, and respected ... and the result of the aforementioned characteristics ... POINTER FOOTWEAR.

Pointer is a footwear brand that you should know ... it has streetwear influences to its style yet also has gentlemans styling thrown in too to give the product a contemporary meets heritage twist. Attention to detail and fabrics is second to none and thus they look good.

wear with : chino, suit, denim ... versatile !!

1935 ... a good year for BADMINTON and pumps

I just want to say that im sat here in my fresh out the box JACK PURCELL trainers and feeling pretty good.

Jack Purcell Canadian Badminton world champion got his signatire shoe in 1935. Heritage is a good thing. makes it feel genuine.

Converse make them now and have done for many a year {www.converse.com}however they were initially designed by Purcell for BF Goodrich rubber company.

the now ubiquitous chuck taylor, albeit a great boot is worn by EVERYONE ... give the Jack Purcell some attention, looks good, feels great and stands out.

worth the wait ... frikkin understatement !!

so after a week of bowing to the corporate order and attending and helping with launches and openings of stores, books and frikkin crisp packets ... i finally got some me and my buddies time ... doing what I wanted and what made ME happy ... like genuinely beaming and feeling like my soul had been saved and that i hadnt sold my time and energy to the corporati !! thankyou to music and ...

THE FELICE BROTHERS !!

Yes finally the band that i feel i have been waiting for all my life for rolled into town and played for over an hour ... i cant quite sum up the emotion but its somewhere between tears and an orgasm ... the songs that i have had on repeat for the last 6 months were finally being played by my new heroes on a stage ... me,matt and his wife Cat MATT N CAT !! (my good lady was ill and had to go ... gutted ... for her as much as anything else !!however the recurring nightmare that i had been having where sue (mi lady) left london with the lead singer could now not manifest itself into reality !!!) were in for an entertainment ...

I digress ... they came, they skulked around before the gig looking moody and then they stepped on stage ... it was like jekyll and hyde complex ... the moodiness ... GONE ...the entertainers were born ... it was like the sons of Mr Bojangles were dancing, stomping and delivering the sweetest blues, chants, melodies, and country soul folk music in the world ...

i welled up, i got down, and we sang along ... it was fantastic ... i wont ever forget it ... i have said it befoe on my conversations with you all but I URGE URGE URGE yoou all to invest in this bans music ... you will be released

hats off to them ...

New Era had their first Flagship Store 'sessions' last night ... all the heads were in attendance ... as were the caps to fit them ... HA HA!

conversation and beer flowed easily which is the premise and crux of a good night ... Mr Fats + camera was in attendance paying more attention to the stiletto than the 59/50 on occasion ;) !!

these guys are doing it right ... good store ... great location and they also have the balls to go off the commercial strip too ... so i would like to raise a glass to soho ... where it was back in the day and hopefully where it will be once more !

'68

over here at my office at freewheelin media - www.freewheelinmedia.com - we are discussing Mai '68 a lot ... for one reason or another ... you will see why before long ... but it brought me to thinking about an amazing book that i have read twice ...

1968 - THE YEAR THAT ROCKED THE WORLD by MARK KURLANSKY

SYNOPSIS:
1968 was a year of political upheaval and protest around the world. In the U.S., there were the assassinations of Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King, the antiwar protests, the Chicago riot at the Democratic National Convention, and the Apollo 8 mission around the moon. In Vietnam, the Tet offensive was underway. Protests in France began the downfall of Charles de Gaulle's government. Soviet tanks rolled into Prague to quell the rebellion there. Mexico City police opened fire on university protesters

THIS IS A MUST READ TO ENABLE THE UNDERSTANDING OR WHERE WE ARE AT THESE DAYS ... A FEW OF US SHOULD TAKE NOTICE OF THE WAY THINGS WERE DONE BACK THEN ...

I am a fan of lamps ... i like to read ... and you know what ... i have visions ocassionally of me in my New England Lodge ... post fly fishing and walking the gundogs ... returning to the lodge ... log fire ... wife cosied up and fussing the dogs and there is my table with the battered / vintage ANGLE POISE lamp on it with my first edition Hemingway 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' next to it and a glass of Ardbeg whisky to warm the cockles and the heart ...

the crux of this story is the design classic ... the ANGLE POISE lamp ... i was looking at them last night with el presidente (my wife) and realised that i need one as my old one went missing 5 years BM (before marriage) ....

Margaret Howell sell the one that i love, designed in the 1930's by George Carwardine and updated and contemporised in the 1970's by Kenneth Grange ...

READ !!!!! ITS BETTER THAN TV !!!!!

Someone is getting it right ... FINALLY !

in response to my own post on the Berghaus shiny vintage puffa ... i called up my boy Mikey ... THE man about town and he tells me that CLERK and TELLER whom i referenced in the previous post have only gone and collaborated with berghaus and designed a neo puffa ... super smart with pinstripe wool and leather combined ... a definite nod to the urban city gent with the pinstripe and then equally so to the country sire by placing leather panels where the butt of the shotgun would sit on a claypigeon shoot !! slick design and clever referencing ... cant mess with that.

C+T have also created a clever site that includes travel, stories, and s**t hot product for the discerning traveller and money makeing urban male (i'll get there one day ;) ... i am super impressed ... go go go ...

Check this album, in fact fuck it ... buy it ... its great ... TARANTULA ... not early Ride but ... it has one of my WAKE UP tracks Black Nite Crash ... of which there was also a EP if you can find it ... these guys were heavy, shoegazing prophets ... way ahead of their time and at the time the competition too ... i still say they stand up tall ... Loz Colberts drumming and Andy Bells guitar on Black Nite Crash make me break into spasmodic moves ... WISH i could play the drums like Loz did ... thumping ... YESSSSSSSSSS !!

CHECK THE ALBUM ARTWORK TOO ... excellent !

puffa

lords and ladies ... the weather is cold and its time to be appreciating the ways in which we can stay warm ... but as always the art of staying warm must be accompanied by style ... i mean !! imagine being cosy and warm and looking like a hobo, gadzooks that is hideous ...

on this subject i would like to introduce a classic jacket to the table ... the puffa ... now there are some fantastic puffas out there ... the likes of PENFIELD, MONCLER, and WOOLRICH have all made some nice pieces ... new casuals meets debonair gent label CLERK and TELLER have done some nice intricately detailed tweed style puffas ... letting the country meet the city in a fabric love in ...

but lords and ladies there is one puffa that i have always wanted yet never owned .. the berghaus 80's casuals puffa ... it is the piece of 'kit' that i have coveted from afar for many a year ... just too young the first time round to be rocking it when the terrace casuals were but it didnt stop an 11 year old lad looking and thinking that it looked the nuts with grey farah's,adidas jean trainers a slazenger navy V neck and a school tie ... damn it was don ... no wonder they got all the girls !!

well i am STILL after one and have uploaded the colourways here that i would love ... if ANYONE knows where i can get one please e-mail me or leave a comment ... steviemona@gmail.com.

true gents know style and style looks good on true gents.

4% tourettes

I speak what others merely think
The banal the inane yet the profound
Their thoughts are guarded by fear
Mine are encouraged by fear
Fear of silence
Chasms of nothing
Like in my dreams
But what are good dreams called
The bad ones have a title at least
Like rich people do
To be bad is to be named
And then I open my mouth
And out come the words
From the recesses of my troubled mind
Other people do it too …
I saw a documentary with people in it
People who liked to fill the silences with words
There’s one in my local park
He shouts at everyone
Except his dog
In summer he rides a horse topless
It makes me laugh then feel sorry
He never catches eyes
Probably just a cold to be honest
But he likes to ride his horse
Walk his dog, and shout
Each to their own
So why my hang-up ?
I read that at Everton
The goalkeeper has my problem too
He has 4% tourettes
he shouts at offensive defenders
How do they know its not 3% or 5% ?
Maybe I should communicate with him
Share my thoughts
Break the silence together

stephen monaghan

Cant ignore what's inside your head

Fuck I'm sick of it
Up to my eyes in it
Down on my luck with it
No way out of it

Forced to live it
Going to die with it
Subjecting others to it
Gain an insight on it

Must I deal with it
Take all the pain of it
Lie on the floor with it
Climb the walls with it

Drive round the bend with it
Cant take a holiday from it
No cant get away with it, from it
But always hang out with it

Best friend is it
Well I doubly doubt it
Just been stuck with it
Don't know where I met it

Its like a drug innit
Stay awake with it
Cant work with it
Never sleep with it

Fuck on it,oh you know it
Cant fuck with it
Always win wont it
Don't ever doubt it

NEW MONOCLE MAG OUT ... YESSSSSSSSSSSSS

so today is saturday the day of rest, the sabbath ... what do you mean thats sunday ... oh no no ... lets get a few things straight ... I am a married man, thus as other married men will testify ... i pledged my allegiance and love to one woman for which i am proud, but what i also did was to hire a manager for life, i am a managed man at the same time as a married one.

Aside from money a wife will also take great pleasure in managing your time ... now my wife hates shops and shopping on saturday ... too busy ... too many shoppers ... THANK GOD FOR E-BAY ... thus, in the words of many a cast member of eastenders ... on sunday we "go up west" ... yes the sabbath is switched to saturday and sunday is retail heaven, GOD is to found residing in shoes in Knightsbridge or Bond Street area thus we go to pray !!

Now the irony is that I really enjoy our jaunts 'up west' ... we look at a few galleries, drink good coffee, walk hand in hand ... its a buzz and 9 times out of 10 my good lady rewards herself with sometime nice ... happy days !!

well tomorrow I have a mission too, being a style CONSCIOUS (not fashion OBSESSED) man i have a few destinations that i want to visit ... and seeing as i watched North by North West today I am checking the smart end of the retail market ... suits, ties, rounded collar shirts and loafers ... Cary Grant = The Don ... my destinations:

1. RALPH LAUREN - cos thats where 'my' God lives ;)
2. BAMFORD AND SONS - keen to find out more ... Tyler Brulee is championing their quintessent english aristo style family run business in the current Bible MONOCLE MAGAZINE ... www.monoclemagazine.com
3. BROOKS BROS. - Thom Browne ... a total style icon (a a co-beliver in the wearing of short trousers) is Creative Director, its gotta be good ... cant believe i havent been yet ... weird for me !!

'HEY' TO ALL OF THE BERLIN CREW AS I KNOW THEY LOVE MONOCLE MAG AND I KNOW THEY WILL HAVE THEIR COPIES TOO ...

wordyrappinghood ...

my bredrin wordsmith Vikas just gave me a gem ... i thought i would share ... i like to think me and most of the folk i know can be defined as such ...

deipnosophist \dyp-NOS-uh-fist\, noun: Someone who is skilled in table talk.

'At the age of six his future as a deipnosophist seemed certain. Guzzling filched apples he loved to prattle. Hogging the pie he invariably piped up and rattled on.

dilemmas a plenty at the moment ... with winter drawing in ... aside from stylish parkas from woolrich {www.woolrichwoolenmillsproduction.com / woolrich.it} i am opting for top buttons done up and accompanied by some silk ... neckties, bowties or silk scarves ...

this morning the silk scarf won the three way battle but bow ties are killa at the moment ...

check www.polo.com for the Ralph Selection ... im personally feeling the country game bowtie with the pheasants on it ... look dudes its not about the baggy jeans and kicks all the time ... lets see some casual meets formal attire on the guys ... girls love it so come on brothers ...

its the prep mixed with the classic english gent ... harvard lecturer look ... !

pumped by audio ...

getting the tube in london sucks .. especially when you have just got soaked ... it feels like you are a grunt in Vietnam waiting for the ambush ... and then it happens ... someone steps on your foot and that fucking punk is 6ft 4 and god knows how many pounds ... for 2 seconds you are a trained killer and you have dismembered him and thrown his remains on the track ... in reality you look at him as if its your fault and bow out of the confrontation ... not today folks ... oh no ... i had "no love lost" by JOY DIVISION pumping in my phones ... so instead of scared rabbit i morphed into mad march hare ... obscenities were exchanged and you know what ... prick backed down ... happy frikkin days ... so i go back to my music feeling like Ricky Hattons gonna feel after he fucks up mayweather on saturday ... and what comes on ... THE BLACK LIPS .... now here is a band that deserves to be humongo guys ... take the amphetamine addled manic pace of The Beatles in Hamburg ... cross it with the smacked out acquiescent sound of the Velvets and throw in the humour of Bill Hicks ... oh yeah and the Rock n Roll fuck you attitude of ... Johnny Cash ...

letting you in ...

i am promoting a new night in London ... tried it once ... killed it so .... its 'appening again ... its called CONVERSATIONSINHEAVEN ... basic premise being ... i think of two people who have influenced the world of music ... the music that inspired them, their music that inspired others ... and then i think of them talking about music in Heaven.

The first one was on the anniversary of the death of Anthony H Wilson so I chose Tony Wilson and Ian Curtis as the two folk who were the protagonists of the 'conversation' ... a host of top DJ's came down and played everthing from ACR to T-REX to JOY DIVISION - to IGGY POP- TO THE SONICS TO ELECTRONIC ... alongside ma bwayz Late Black Rob, Rusty, Mole and Luke Product there was ... The legend that is Andy Weatherall headlined and blew the roof off ... BIG UP Mr W.

The identity of the night was to to have each one of the two protagonists faces superimposed onto the bodies of the WARHOLvsBASQUIAT poster giving it an edge that makes you think of an argument ... as music does that to people ... )leon and Rob)designed by my man Sunil Pawar. see post below

I want ideas for the next one ...

I was thinking maybe Arthur Russell vs Larry Levan ??

i want people to suggest two dead heroes or unsung dead heroes whose influence changed music, who could be seen as having a chat in gods kitchen ...

let me know sil vous plait !

heres a little song i wrote ...

A maiden so fair
So fair as to have breached the code of conduct
Held in highest esteem by gamblers
Who from rushing for gold
Were distracted by the glittering prize
A subordinate unfortunate
Knowing the prowess of the mistress
And the meandering thought process of a man in distress
She would face the mirror and lift up her corset
An asset that has managed by many
Yet rarely a man in finance
Hers was the role of the mother and the lover
Both would put a meal on the table
Yet one cuisine was more juicy than the other
Through her culinary delights
And starry eyes like clear sky nights
She made her money in the towns
Of bars, that overflowed with crowns
Her currency ... anatomy
Her reward a thousand husbands
Her quandry a conscience
Her aim .... Not quite true
